Verifying Your Website on Pinterest

January 6th, 2013 by Liz

pinterestlogo2At the end of October 2012 Pinterest added a new feature to Pinterest accounts called website verification. At this point you can only verify a top-level domain, such as www.example.com.  If your website is not a top-level domain, then you won’t be able to verify your website until Pinterest makes this option available.

There are two ways you can verify your website:

  • By HTML file upload
  • With HTML meta tags

Both of these methods require you to have access to the hosting account or the uploaded code of your website. If you do not have access to either of these contact your web designer and either give them access to your Pinterest account or send them the HTML file or meta tag provided by Pinterest.

To get the HTML file or meta tag go to Settings on your Pinterest account and then click on the Verify Website button that appears next to your web address. This will take you to a new screen where you can verify by HTML file or choose to verify by meta tag.

 Verify By HTML File Upload

To verify by HTML file  click on the Download link in point 1 of the instructions (the name of the file is in the brackets to the right of the link). The file downloaded from the link is unique to your account only. If you try to use someone else’s file you will be unable to verify your website.

Once downloaded, upload this file to the root folder of your webserver.  The root folder’s name can vary depending on your hosting provider, but public_html, www, or wwwroot are common. If you upload the file to a subfolder (  e.g. www.sublimewebdesign.com.au/foldername/pinterest-08d83.html) Pinterest will not be able to find the file to verify your website.

Once you have uploaded the file go back to  https://pinterest.com/domain/verify/ and click on “Click Here” in Point 3 to complete the verification process.

If the verification is successful a success message will appear under the instructions. Once you have successfully verified your website you can delete the verification file from your website if you wish.

Verify By Meta Tag

If you prefer you can verify your website using a meta tag. Just click on the link that appears under the instruction for verifying by HTML file and a new set of instructions will appear.

You will see a <meta> tag which is unique to your Pinterest account. Copy and past this code into the <head> section of your index.html file (you do not need to do this on every page of your website only the index.html page).

Once this is done go back to  https://pinterest.com/domain/verify/ and click on “Click Here” in Point 2 to complete the verification process.

Again, if the verification is successful, a success message will appear under the instructions. Once you have successfully verified your website you can delete the verification file from your website if you wish.

Once you have verified your website let us know by posting a link to your Pinterest account in a comment below. Make sure you add the link in the message section so everyone can see it.
